Saskatchewan PNP announces new immigration program

The Hard-to-Fill Skills Pilot Project will allow Saskatchewan employers to recruit international talent for certain in-demand occupations. Eligible jobs under this pilot will include entry-level positions that may require on-the-job training. The most labor-intensive sectors in Saskatchewan are health care, manufacturing, agriculture, agricultural technology, construction, hospitality, and retail.
“The demand for labor in our province is strong and will only increase with the important economic projects recently announced in Saskatchewan,” Immigration and Skills Minister Jeremy Harrison said in a statement. Press. “This new hard-to-fill skills pilot project — developed in Saskatchewan for Saskatchewan — is an advancement in our self-reliance discussions with the federal government and will help provide employers with greater access to international options for recruiting workers. This comes on top of record investments in the training and development of our provincial workforce as we enter a period of strong growth from the global pandemic. “
Workers appointed under this component of the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) will be supported by their employers and the community. The pilot launch is scheduled for December 2021.
“This is very positive news for hospitality businesses in Saskatchewan,” Hospitality Saskatchewan President and CEO Jim Bence said in the release. “This pilot project is designed to attract talent and a great program for all sectors that are currently experiencing labor recruitment challenges in the province. While we always work hard to exhaust all opportunities to hire locally, we need to be creative to make sure we have the right workforce to help our business and communities grow and prosper in Saskatchewan, what this unique program will be particularly useful for post-COVID. “
Some of the eligibility criteria for candidates include:
- Have a full-time, permanent offer of employment and SINP job approval letter for an eligible occupation from a registered Saskatchewan employer;
- Meet a minimum Canadian official language proficiency level; and
- Meet the minimum educational and work experience requirements, which include having at least one year of work experience in the same occupation as the job offer or six-month work experience in that job in Saskatchewan.
Currently, the release does not say which professions are eligible, the minimum education requirement or the exact level of language proficiency required.
For employers to be eligible, they must demonstrate that they have made considerable efforts to hire nationally before they can use the pilot for recruiting. They must also demonstrate the need and benefit to their business, and meet the requirements for worker settlement assistance. No further details have been released.
